PRODUCT: Nike
TIME PERIOD: 2015
PURPOSE: Get more
people to buy Nike products so that they can assist them on their journey to get to
their body goal.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
-The target
audience for this ad is anyone who are on their journey to get to their body's goal. We can identify this, because the ad stated that "I better get an ab out of this," and they also showed a picture of a women doing push up. Nike created this ad in order to get more people motivated into getting fit, and also suggest to viewers that Nike's product will be a great help for them on their fitness journey.
-GENDER:
“Women are more motivated to get fit than men." This assumption is realistic because women care more about their look, and body than men. They will get stress out, and will be super worry about how they look like. Also, many women tend to have a very low self-esteem, and keep thinking that they are super fat when they are not. Those reasons proved that this assumption is realistic, but at the same time man are also very motivated to get a better body, due to the same reasons as the ladies, or even because of social pressure with everyone saying how a real men supposed to look like, and start comparing normal man with Superman. This assumption does challenge the stereotype of "that girl" at the gym, where some girls come to the gym looking super good with a full face of make up on, and they are there just to get some attention from people around them. These girls usually do not have a specific fitness goal, they just go to the gym just because they can.
-RACE: There was not enough information provided for us to make an assumption about race in the ad. We can only see the woman's back in the picture, she could be a really tan Asian, Hispanic, or Caucasian, or even an African American person.
-CLASS: There was not enough information provided in this ad in order for us to make an assumption about class. The woman is wearing all black workout clothes, this is very basic, and create a very equality feel, because everyone wear black, so we are not able to identify which social class does she belong to.
TYPE OF CLAIM:
-Transfer: Nike's goal in this advertisement is very positive, because they are trying to get more people into working out. This not only help the viewers to be fit, they will also have less health issues, and will live a happier life.
-Bandwagon: The quote "I better get an ab out of this," made it seem like Nike is telling people, if she got abs, then you will need some too, or you will not look as pretty as her. This will get more people to buy Nike's workout clothes, and start working out too, because no one want to be left behind when the current trend hit.

PERSUASIVE APPEALS:
-Pathos: The model on the ad looked very fit, this can appeal emotionally to both men and women. The men can find this very attractive, and the women will feel kind of hurt, and find the need to start working out too. Either way, they will both be interested in Nike's products, for the women, because they wanted to look like the model, and for the men, they will feel like they need to match, and be at the same level with the model.
-Logos: The Company did not provide any scientific facts about their products, or give us any numbers or percentage. If Nike include some facts from expert about how being fit will decrease the rate of a certain sickness, then more people will be interested in working out, which will lead to them buying something from Nike.
-Ethos: This ad did use ethos, because they had the model representing their company. We cannot see her face, but she could be a really famous person or not, but either way, by using the model, Nike is showing us that she used their stuff and became fit, which will motivate their audience to do the same thing.
POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES:
-Long-term: "More people will be fit, and active." By looking at this ad, people are getting motivation to start their own fitness journey, so in the near future more and more people will be super active.
-Short-term: "More people will purchase products from Nike." While fitness journey will take a while to finish, but something that will occur right away is Nike sell rate will increase, because people will be inspired by the ad and will head straight to the nearest Nike store to get some motivation workout clothes.
-The message didn’t create an unrealistic expectation for their audience because they do not have to do something out of this world in order to achieve their body goal. A fitness journey is something that everyone will experience differently, so we can't really say that it is unrealistic for someone to get in shape.
-The message of this ad does not undermine or counter any social change, they did not have a negative goal of weakening the foundation of the community, in fact, they are strengthening many individuals inside and out.
